Date Formats in Excel

Excel stores dates as a number. That way, it can easily subtract days from each other. How dates are displayed, however, can be easily changed.


With the cells you want to change selected, open the Format Cells box (Ctrl + 1).

Select the Date Category. In the Type section, you can select any of the pre-loaded date formats.


If the format you want isn't listed, select the Custom Category and create your own format using the codes below:

For example, “ddd, mmm d, yyyy” would display as "Wed, Mar 11, 2020"
